W.I.N.
I love sports. I love the camaraderie, the competition, as well as the lessons of life it can teach you. Another thing I love about sports, which I would count as probably the most important of all, is the teamwork aspect of it. To me, there’s nothing better than sharing the pleasure of victory or the misery of defeat with those who’ve been on the playing field with you and can relate to the journey. One of my favorite phrases, which is credited to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has become, “It takes teamwork to make the dream work.” In other words, you can do or have whatever you want in life, but you’ll always need others to help you achieve it. Truer words have never been spoken.
Although teamwork is essential to making your dream work, we all know that there’s no “I” in TEAM. However, there is one in WIN. I once heard Lou Holtz, former Notre Dame Head football coach and current ESPN college football analyst, give a great definition to the acronym W.I.N. He said W.I.N. stands for What’s Important Now. His winning strategy: Evaluate your past (look at what has happened and get over it); assess your future (where you want to go from here, or the vision or plan you have for yourself and your family); and the sum of those two things will help you focus on what you should do now! I couldn’t agree more.
